A conservation genetic study of Rafflesia speciosa (Rafflesiaceae): patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation within and between islands Naturalis

Rafflesia speciosa is a threatened endo-holoparasitic species. It has several populations in the Central Panay Mountain Range (CPMR) of Panay island and a single population on Negros Island. Because R. speciosa is the only Philippine species of the genus that is not endemic to an individual island, it is a suitable species for improving our understanding of the factors underlying the high island endemism of Philippine Rafflesia. For this purpose and to inform the conservation management of R. speciosa, patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation were studied using 15 microsatellite loci and samples from nine populations. None of these populations shows evidence of inbreeding and R. speciosa has similar levels of heterozygosity as generally observed...

A new Celaenorrhinus species (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) from a remarkable locality in the Philippines Naturalis

Celaenorrhinus halconis spec. nov. is described from Mt. Halcon in Mindoro (Philippines). The new species does not seem to be closely related to other Philippine Celaenorrhinus species, but bears resemblance to the endemic Javanese montane species C. toxopei de Jong, 1981.

A new species of Cymbasoma (Copepoda: Monstrilloida) from the Sulu Sea, Philippines Naturalis

A specimen of a monstrilloid copepod collected by the U.S. Fisheries Steamer “Albatross“ in the Sulu Sea, west coast of Mindanao, Philippines, and deposited in the U.S. National Museum of Natural History, was taxonomically restudied. The specimen had been originally identified as a male of Monstrilla serricornis Sars by C.B. Wilson. Reexamination revealed that the specimen represents a new species of the genus Cymbasoma, C. mcalicei. This species can be distinguished by its body proportions and body size, but mainly by the structure of the genital lappets, which have a serrated posterior margin unique in the genus. This is the seventh species of Cymbasoma reported from East or Southeast Asia.

A new species of Vanoverberghia (Zingiberaceae) from the Philippines Naturalis

A new species from the Philippines, Vanoverberghia rubrobracteata, is described and illustrated here. The new species is most similar to Vanoverberghia sepulchrei from which it differs in its leaves with oblong to narrowly elliptic lamina, unevenly truncate ligule apex, glabrous and red floral bracts, red calyx, white or pink corolla tube and lobes, and absence of spots on the style.

Air Pollution Control Policy Options for Metro Manila AgEcon

The Asian Development Bank has sponsored research on market-based instruments for managing pollution in Metro Manila, Philippines, where air quality is seriously degraded. This report offers three policy options for reducing particulate emissions and their precursors. For stationary sources, we recommend an emissions fee that creates efficient financial incentives to reduce emissions while raising revenues for monitoring and enforcement activities. For mobile sources, we propose a pilot diesel retrofit program using a low-cost technology that is effective at existing 2,000 ppm sulfur content. Second, we recommend a charge on the sulfur content of diesel fuel to encourage meeting and surpassing the 500 ppm standard to allow for more advanced particulate...

There are ten known species of Amorphophallus in the Philippines, and an eleventh is herein described and named as Amorphophallus adamsensis. It resembles A. dactylifer and A. rostratus. Diagnostic characters of this new species are provided.

In the Philippines, where rice is considered the most important food crop, attempts to influence rice prices have been prevalent. The government, through National Food Authority (NFA) has sought to establish stocks and control imports to stabilize prices since its establishment in 1972 to support farm gate prices and reduce retail price of rice. But data shows divergence in retail prices and farm prices since mid 1960s. In this paper, we use vector autoregression (VAR) to analyze the movement of Philippine rice margins with government stocks and weather supply shocks to able to determine government effectiveness in actual times of market stress. Another New Species of Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) from Luzon, Philippines: R. Leonardi Naturalis

A new species of Philippine Rafflesia is described. Rafflesia leonardi is the eighth species of Rafflesia described from the Philippines and the fourth species from Luzon Island. It most closely resembles R. lobata and R. manillana in perigone colour and wart ornamentations and in the wide aperture relative to diaphragm diameter. It is, however, different from both of these and other Philippine Rafflesia species in its flower size and disk that lacks or has rudimentary processes.

Athyrium erythropodum (Woodsiaceae, Pteridophyta), a new Philippine record Naturalis

Athyrium erythropodum Hayata, which was previously thought to be endemic to Taiwan, has recently been discovered in the Philippines. This species has seldom been reported or described in the literature and if so has involved erroneous morphological description and diagnosis, which has caused confusion and partly erroneous taxonomic treatment. A detailed and revised diagnostic description of the species is provided in this report, along with illustrations showing its essential features.

This paper seeks to identify the factors which are responsible for successful management of natural resources when communities are given opportunities to manage those resources. Applying the social capital framework, it analyzes empirical data from the well known case of Kalahan Educational Foundation, the Philippines. The study confirms previous findings, which have emphasized the high level of cohesion and traditional norms among a homogeneous community of indigenous peoples (bonding social capital) as a success factor. Challenging the win-win discourse on conservation and development: analyzing support for marine protected areas Ecology and Society

Conservation designations such as protected areas are increasing in numbers around the world, yet it is widely reported that many are failing to reach their objectives. They are frequently promoted as opportunities for win-win outcomes that can both protect biodiversity and lead to economic benefits for affected communities. This win-win view characterizes the dominant discourse surrounding many protected areas. Although this discourse and the arguments derived from it may lead to initial acceptance of conservation interventions, this study shows how it does not necessarily result in compliance and positive attitudes toward specific protected areas. Comparison of protein profile of co-existing Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica parasite in Bos taurus (cattle) and Bubalus bubalis (Philippine water buffalo) OAK

Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica habitually co-exist as parasites of cattle (Bos taurus) and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), and despite variation in their morphometry, their species status is suspicious. Liver flukes isolated from cattle and water buffalo were initially sorted as F. gigantica or F. hepatica, and crude proteins were extracted and subjected to SDS-PAGE. Cattle had the preponderance of F. gigantica, while F. hepatica was the dominant species in water buffaloes. Co-existing cattle and bubaline fasciolids revealed similar protein profile suggestive of a close genetic relationship.
